A brief introduction to how sugar is made and by whom. The Tromp family, after emigrating from the Netherlands, established a sugar plantation in Suriname. L A Tromp provided an account of the machinery and equipment used on the plantation. The plant consisted of various cane crushers and mills for extracting juice from canes; boilers for converting juice into syrup; evaporators for concentrating syrup to produce crystalline sugar particles; centrifuges for separating liquid molasses from crystals; a filter press to clean liquid molasses before it reached tanks for storing. The equipment was basic, but the Tromp family knew how to operate it efficiently. The company employed laborers to operate the equipment. Since 1879 they had been operating the plant with electricity until 1902 when there was a rise in sugar prices. The Tromps were not only sugar planters but also traders of emeralds and precious stones. They took some of their profits from this trade and used them to expand their agriculture business, buying more land in Suriname, Brazil and Brazil USA. They were able to afford railroads for transporting cane juice across their huge estates. The plantation was registered "Den Ham" which can be translated as "big hill" or "big land". Over time other plantations merged into the "Den Ham" plantation. The other plantations included "Zorg en Hoop, Koningskroon and Saramacca". by L A Tromp Ebook http://www.archive.org/details/machineryequipmen00tromrich http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Special:BookSources/9781434410369 2014-04-22T12:04:52Z 2014-04-22T14:41:59Z 26 4 http://www.archive. org/details/machineryequipmen00tromrich http://www.sugarco.com/Weblog/dewiki.php?page=machinery_and_equipment http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L._A. _Tromp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_cane_crusher http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evaporator https://books.google. cfa1e77820
